NDC Support Facility | Covid-19 Update
April 28, 2020
We at K-CEP hope that you and your organization remain safe, healthy, and intact during this trying and uncertain time.
In response to the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent postponement of COP26, we have decided to temporarily delay the application process for the NDC Support Facility. Please note that we are still welcoming and encouraging proposals, but the timeline for applications has been delayed in line with the rescheduling of COP26.
The initial application deadline was set for June 2020, with a public announcement of successful proposals planned for COP26 in November 2020. However, we have decided to shift our timeline to coincide with the delayed COP26, which is now due to take place in 2021. A new date for COP26 is yet to be confirmed, but according to organizers this “will be set out in due course following further discussion with parties.”
It is important to highlight that despite the delay to this year’s UN climate conference, updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) are still expected to be submitted during 2020, and we therefore hope that enhanced cooling commitments will also be pledged by governments this year.
“Our work in 2020 is not, in any form, on hold. The climate emergency has not taken time off for the coronavirus… While Covid-19 may have postponed COP26, it has not postponed the need for Parties to accelerate work towards fulfilling commitments they have already made. Nor does it postpone the requirement for nations to submit or revise their national climate action plans—known as NDCs—in 2020.”
Patricia Espinosa, Executive Secretary, UN Climate Change, April 23, 2020
Due to the current pandemic, there has been an understandable shift in the focus of governments and the international development community to protecting public health and ensuring economic recovery. With that in mind, we wanted to give applicants more time to put together their proposals in partnership with governments, which we hope to do by extending the application window.
We want to take this opportunity to thank those who have already taken the time to prepare and submit their proposals, and to encourage interested parties to please apply. The NDC Support Facility’s guidance and funding is still available and will be allocated to successful applicants as soon as possible.
We will update information on the K-CEP website, Twitter and LinkedIn as and when it is available. Alternatively, please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to be notified of any future NDC Support Facility updates via email.
As we all pivot to respond to the impacts of this pandemic, it is important to realize that work on efficient, climate-friendly cooling is perhaps more important than ever. With surging demand for cooling in hospitals and for effective cold chains to be ready for rapid vaccine deployment, the global cooling system is clearly a central player. Managing it efficiently and in a climate-friendly way is paramount.
